JOURNAL QUILT 2007

Here is my 2007 Journal Quilt currently showing in Houston.

I enjoyed this 'process' and thank Karey immensely for this opportunity!!

I was going through a really bad time, really needed some time to myself

and it all comes through with this piece. I miss dreadfully my beloved West Coast and

the ancient cedars. I hope you will enjoy this and post a comment please.

The statement that went with it is as follows:

IS IT OR ISN’T IT?

Creative Quilting techniques used: words with fabric ink (p.53); cut out space
(p.123); scanned face (p.164)

I was captivated by two chapters in the Creative Quilting book, that of Stories and the other, Special Places. I wanted to combine both into one piece. At the same time, I wanted to give one impression at a glance and a deeper inspection would reveal the real meaning. I started with the scanned face, computer manipulated and printed on organza. I love curves and so cut the fabric representing the night sky and inserted a light fabric, giving a hint of a rising moon. Using Fabric ink, and Shiva Paintstiks I then drew, printed and colored. I cut out behind the face, following the curve, which exposed just the batting, providing the right color and texture that I was hoping to achieve. The ancient cedar was made manipulating fabric using twin needles. Overall quilting in circles and stones give the piece continuity. This piece was influenced by a ‘Special Place’ and its folklore. I feel I achieved that as well as being able to tell ‘Stories’ through the illusory correlation of seeing one thing… or am I?

With ancient cedars filling the air with the fresh pungency of their boughs, shorebirds leaving footprints in the sand, the evening has drawn in, leaving the reflection of light on the beach, the phosphorescence of the foam caused by the crashing waves and yes, look…… is it a giant crab? Or is it a birthing basket of yesteryear and an ancient people? And a closer look reveals aroma therapy being enjoyed by….. is it my imagination? Or is it me? Are those rocks in my head? Or is it just wishful thinking? Well, maybe…. IS IT? OR ISN’T IT?

I love the machine quilting and your use of decorative stitches. The detail on the enlarged view is wonderful.

Very nicely done, esp the portrait looking so ethereal, like a wood nymph taking a break from the tree....

I have always been drawn to those trees and finally saw one about 10 years ago! The smell stays with you forever. I feel like I was just transported back.
Thanks for the memory. Your quilt is beautiful

I took several looks at the piece. First the small one, then the enlargement, then back to the small one, and back to the enlargement. It is just beautiful. Thanks for sharing.
